’95 Tournament Participant
I played for the Lancaster Township Royals during the 1995 season.
It was our goal as a team all season long was to make it to the New Era Tournament. When we did, our opening game of the tournament was against Garden Spot, which was a team we didn’t face during the season.
The game was on a summer evening at Kunkle Field in Mount Joy. I was on the mound for our team. The game was not as close as the score indicated.
We hit the ball well, and I kept Garden Spot in check. In the late innings it got pretty interesting with a few errors in the field, and before we knew it Garden Spot was within one.
I was on top of my game, and the curve was working to my advantage.
I was able to keep their hitters off balance all game.
With some key hits from our team, including big power hitter Kris Wilson, we were able to hold off a charging Garden Spot team. We pulled together as a team just like we did all season long and pulled out a very close victory.
I held Garden Spot to just one hit and besides a few errors we played a great game.
The next game of the tournament was against Manheim, which ended up winning it all. Once again I took the mound and this game went down the drain right from the beginning.
Manheim hit the ball well, but we didn’t field the way we were coached and ended up giving up a bundle of unearned runs. But I still think about the thrill of playing in the 1995 event.
